The US Cultural Sector’s Contribution to Our NDC

UNFCCC: What are the NDCs

Success Requires Everyone and Every Sector

Sign on to a request to the Administration for an NDC of 50% emissions reductions by 2030 (from 2005) HERE by April 13th end of day Pacific time.

Purpose: Administrator Gina McCarthy is leading the domestic effort to provide input for the US Nationally-Determined Contribution that Secretary and Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Change, John Kerry, has promised”as soon as practicable,” sometime in March. While the NDC will promise overall commitment goals for reducing global warming, such goals must be based on actionable change at every level of society. This includes the cultural sector. If those of us in museums and theaters, zoos and aquariums, gardens and historic sites, opera houses and ballet companies wish to attract support for and awareness of our climate action, then we must declare and commit to participating in the national effort to reduce global warming.

Our Commitments: Sustainable Museums has organized input to share with America’s Pledge for consideration as NDC support materials, but we’re always looking for more data. Our job is to identify existing sector commitments, and potential, to mitigating climate change, adapting to it, and combined approaches. The categories most likely to be appropriate include

  • Energy Efficiency and Clean Energy Generation
  • Clean Transportation, such as electric vehicles
  • Waste Reduction
  • Water and Natural Resource Conservation
  • Agriculture and Re-Forestation
  • Finance, especially divestment

Sharing Your Commitments and Intentions: If your institution has, or is planning to develop institutional carbon-free goals, or individual categories targets, please contact The Sustainable Museums team will include your existing or developing target in the materials collected, and work with you to acknowledge your commitment and contribution. Thank you.

Nationally determined contributions (NDCs) are at the heart of the Paris Agreement and the achievement of these long-term goals. NDCs embody efforts by each country to reduce national emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change. The Paris Agreement (Article 4, paragraph 2) requires each Party to prepare, communicate and maintain successive nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that it intends to achieve. Parties shall pursue domestic mitigation measures, with the aim of achieving the objectives of such contributions.
